I ordered a Mossy 535 so I can start shooting 3.5inch shells. All my buds say that I should practice with 3 inchers, cause without the adrenalin going of a good gobbler, it will knock me on my a-ss and I will be hurtin. Is it really that bad?

I borrowed my buddie's today, no recoil pad, pump, 3.5. I'm a little sore. It's deffinitly bearable with a recoil pad though.

It doesn't matter what gun, what caliber you shoot. Recoil management can be taught. True, some of the old big game guns used in Africa will help you sit down in a hurry; but you can learn how to shoot them and live with the recoil.

Practice with the load you are going to shoot.

Pattern the round you are going to shoot but if you just need practice use the 2 3/4". Shot shells trajectory won't differ and they are cheaper and a lot easier on the shoulder. You won't want to practice more than a couple of rounds with 3 1/2" and the practice with those might create more bad habits than good, such as a flinch. Sight in and pattern the round you want to hunt with but practice with the lightest loads you can get.

Once upon a time, there were 10 guage shotguns. These faded from the marketplace because consumers felt that the 12 guage could do basically the same as the 10 guage - only with less recoil and cost. The american marketplace is now back in a "bigger is better" phase so the ammo companies created a 12 guage shell that mimics the old 10 guage round and repackaged it as a 12 guage 3.5" magnum. They're essentially the same, just ones been renamed for new consumers who don't remember the older version.

Jess - Browning still makes a very successful 10 gauge - the BPS.

I know they're still out there, but they represent a very small portion of market share. The 10 gauge was more prevelent 30 years ago. This "new" 3.5" magnum is basically a 10 gauge "lite" round.

I used to load shotgun shells and brewed up cases of 00 Buck and similar loads. Of course, I got into the trench gun type of shotgun and fired untold hundreds of those loads into every conceivable type of garbage at trash dumps. I know exactly what a specific load will penetrate and what it won't.

After all of that shooting, I got rid of anything loaded in 3" magnum and promised to never shoot them again. The 3" mags repeatedly split open the fingers of my huge (XXXL) hands on the trigger guard along with the expected shoulder issues and loosening the molars on the right side of my jaw. The 3.5" didn't exist then.

I'm a High Power Rifle shooter and have experienced a lot of recoil including the .458 Winchester Magnum but the 3" and 3.5 inch 12 gauge rounds are off the scale for me.

If something can't be stopped with a 2 3/4" magnum 12 gauge, then I'll just pick a different firearm.

Roger, you must have been using a pump action shotgun.

A semi-auto, like my Benelli M-2, or a Remington 1100 is just fine with 3 inchers!

Im still a fan of the 10 gauge Ithica Roadblocker. It was designed to basically destroy the engine, or punch through into the driver, or punch the engine back into the cab of the car. Those shotguns were insanely neat little beasties
